Cheesy Hot Beef Sandwich

  • Author: Alyssa

Description

Savor the Cheesy Hot Beef Sandwich—thinly sliced beef in rich gravy, topped with melted cheese on a bun for a deliciously hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb thinly sliced turkey: This is the star of our sandwich. Sliced turkey is lean, flavorful, and absorbs all the delicious gravy, making every bite a delight.
  • 1 onion, chopped: Onions add sweetness and depth of flavor when sautéed, providing a base for the heavenly gravy.
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced: Garlic enhances flavor and aroma, giving a savory punch that perfectly complements the turkey.
  • 2 tbsp butter: Used for sautéing the onions and garlic, butter adds richness to the dish.
  • 2 tbsp flour: This ingredient will thicken our gravy, creating a luscious consistency that clings to the turkey.
  • 1 cup beef broth: Although we are using turkey, beef broth enhances the overall flavor profile of the gravy and adds a hearty touch.
  • 1/2 cup milk: Milk adds creaminess to the gravy, balancing out the flavors.
  • Salt & pepper: Basic seasonings that enhance all the other flavors.
  • 4 slices of cheese (provolone or Swiss): Gooey melted cheese is essential for that signature comfort food experience. Provolone offers a mellow flavor, while Swiss gives a slightly sweet touch.

Instructions

  1. Heat the pan: Start by melting 2 tbsp of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté the aromatics: Add 1 chopped onion and 2 minced garlic cloves to the skillet. Cook until the onions are translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Make the roux: Sprinkle in 2 tbsp of flour and stir continuously until the mixture becomes golden, creating a roux—about 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add the liquids: Gradually whisk in 1 cup of beef broth and 1/2 cup of milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens—around 5 minutes. Keep an eye on it to prevent lumps.
  5. Season the gravy: Add salt and pepper to taste, ensuring the gravy is flavorful and well-balanced.
  6. Incorporate the turkey: Stir in 1 lb of thinly sliced turkey and simmer for an additional 3-5 minutes, allowing the turkey to absorb the delicious gravy.
  7. Prepare the buns: While the turkey is simmering, butter the insides of your buns (as many as you need) and toast them in a separate pan over medium heat until golden brown.
  8. Assemble the sandwich: On each toasted bun, layer the hot turkey with gravy and top it with 4 slices of your favorite cheese. Return the open sandwiches to the skillet to allow the cheese to melt—about 2-3 minutes.
  9. Add toppings: Finish with any desired toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, or sautéed mushrooms.
  10. Serve and enjoy: Plate the sandwiches and serve hot, ready to be devoured!
