Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups shredded cooked chicken: The star of the dish, providing protein and moisture to every bite. For the best flavor, consider using rotisserie chicken.
- 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese: This cheese adds creaminess and that gooey texture we love. Feel free to use cheddar or Monterey Jack as an alternative.
- ½ cup salsa: Adds a fresh, zesty flavor to the filling. You can choose mild or spicy, depending on your preference.
- 1 can diced chiles: For an added kick and savory depth. Green chiles work particularly well.
- Garlic salt & pepper, to taste: Essential for seasoning the filling and enhancing the overall taste.
- 12 flour tortillas: The vessel for the delicious filling. Use soft tortillas to help achieve the perfect roll without tearing.
Toppings: Don’t forget about the toppings! You can customize your flautas with:
- Shredded lettuce: For a fresh crunch.
- Chopped tomatoes: Adds color and sweetness.
- Green salsa: For those who enjoy extra heat.
- Guacamole: A creamy addition that complements the flautas wonderfully.
- Cilantro Ranch dressing: For a refreshing finish.
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) to keep the flautas warm while you fry them. This ensures they stay crispy.
- Heat Oil: In a large frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to check the temperature for perfect frying.
- Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine 3 cups shredded cooked chicken, 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese, ½ cup salsa, and 1 can diced chiles. Season with garlic salt and pepper to taste and mix well.
- Assemble Flautas: Take a 12 flour tortillas and fill each tortilla with about 2-3 tablespoons of the chicken mixture. Roll each tortilla tightly and secure it with toothpicks to hold the shape.
- Fry the Flautas: Carefully place the rolled flautas in the hot oil, cooking until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side. Use tongs to turn them for even cooking.
- Drain and Keep Warm: Remove the flautas from the oil and let them drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Place them in the preheated oven until ready to serve.
- Serve: Once all the flautas are fried, remove toothpicks and serve hot with your choice of toppings like shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, green salsa, guacamole, and cilantro ranch dressing.
