Description
Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a hearty twist on the classic sandwich, featuring seasoned ground beef served on thick, buttery Texas toast.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup onion, diced
- 1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices of Texas toast
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened (for grilling)
Instructions
- Cook the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 lb of ground beef. Cook until fully browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the Vegetables: To the browned meat, add 1 cup of diced onion and 1/2 cup of diced green bell pepper. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
- Prepare the Sauce: Stir in 1 cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of onion powder. Mix well to combine all ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
- Toast the Bread: While the meat is simmering, preheat a separate skillet on medium heat. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast. Place the bread buttered-side down in the skillet and toast until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes. Flip and toast the other side as well.
- Assemble: Once everything is ready, spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe filling onto one slice of the toasted Texas bread. Top with another slice to create a sandwich, or serve it open-faced for easier eating.
- Serve: Cut the sandwiches in half if desired and serve hot, ideally with a side of fries or a simple salad for a complete meal.
