Delicious Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Description

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a hearty twist on the classic sandwich, featuring seasoned ground beef served on thick, buttery Texas toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices of Texas toast
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened (for grilling)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 lb of ground beef. Cook until fully browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the Vegetables: To the browned meat, add 1 cup of diced onion and 1/2 cup of diced green bell pepper. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: Stir in 1 cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of onion powder. Mix well to combine all ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  5. Toast the Bread: While the meat is simmering, preheat a separate skillet on medium heat. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast. Place the bread buttered-side down in the skillet and toast until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes. Flip and toast the other side as well.
  6. Assemble: Once everything is ready, spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe filling onto one slice of the toasted Texas bread. Top with another slice to create a sandwich, or serve it open-faced for easier eating.
  7. Serve: Cut the sandwiches in half if desired and serve hot, ideally with a side of fries or a simple salad for a complete meal.
