Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb. ground beef: The base of these appetizers, ground beef adds richness and a classic flavor that everyone loves.
  • 1 lb. ground hot sausage: This ingredient imparts a deliciously spicy kick to the dish, balancing the creaminess of the cheese.
  • 1 lb. Velveeta: Known for its melt-in-your-mouth texture, Velveeta is key for achieving that gooey, cheesy quality that binds the ingredients together.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce: Adds a depth of flavor, enhancing the savory qualities of the meat.
  • 1 teaspoon oregano: This herb contributes a warm, aromatic element that complements the other ingredients.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt: Offers an added layer of flavor without being overpowering.
  • ½ teaspoon salt: Necessary for balancing flavors and enhancing the overall taste.
  • 1 loaf party rye bread: Acts as the perfect vessel for the delicious filling, making these bites easy to serve and enjoy.
  • Chopped parsley (fresh or dried, optional garnish): Provides a pop of color and freshness on top of the warm bites.

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, place the 1 lb. ground beef and 1 lb. ground hot sausage.
  2. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking up the meat as it cooks (approximately 7–10 minutes).
  3. While the meat cooks, cut the 1 lb. Velveeta into cubes for easier melting.
  4. Once the meat is cooked, drain off the excess grease (leaving a little is okay).
  5. Add the 1 lb. Velveeta to the skillet, continuing to cook until melted and fully incorporated with the meat mixture (about 3–5 minutes).
  6. Stir in the 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon oregano, ½ teaspoon garlic salt, and ½ teaspoon salt until evenly combined.
  7. Preheat your broiler to high.
  8. On a lined baking sheet, arrange slices of 1 loaf party rye bread.
  9. Using a spoon, place a 2-tablespoon-sized scoop of the cheese and meat mixture onto each slice of rye bread.
  10. Broil the appetizers until hot and bubbly, approximately 2–3 minutes. Be sure to watch carefully to prevent burning! Alternatively, you can bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F for 15–18 minutes.
  11. If desired, sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.
  12. Enjoy your delicious Hanky Panky Appetizers!
