Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean): The star of the dish, lean ground turkey gives the meatballs a moist texture without excess fat.
- 1 large egg: Acts as a binder, ensuring the meatballs hold their shape during cooking.
- ½ cup breadcrumbs: Panko or Italian breadcrumbs add structure while contributing to a nicely browned exterior.
- ⅓ cup grated Parmesan cheese: Adds depth of flavor and a hint of nuttiness that complements turkey perfectly.
- 2 tbsp milk: Keeps the meatballs tender and moist as they cook.
- 2 garlic cloves, minced: Provides aromatic flavor that enhances the overall dish.
- 1 tsp onion powder: Offers a savory note without the texture of fresh onions.
- 1 tsp dried oregano: A classic Italian herb that elevates the flavor profile.
- 1 tsp dried basil: Adds a sweet and slightly peppery flavor that works well with tomato sauce.
- ½ tsp smoked paprika: Gives a subtle smokiness and rich color to the meatballs.
- ½ tsp salt: Essential for enhancing flavors.
- ¼ tsp black pepper: Introduces a gentle heat.
- 18 small mozzarella balls (or 1 cup cubed mozzarella): The delightful cheesy surprise at the center of each meatball!
For the sauce, you will need:
- 2 tbsp olive oil: Used for sautéing and adds richness to the dish.
- 1 small onion, diced: A base flavor that brings sweetness when cooked.
- 3 garlic cloves, minced: Adds complexity to the sauce’s flavor.
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes: The heart of the sauce; provides acidity and balances the richness of the meatballs.
- 1 tsp sugar: Helps to offset the acidity of the tomatoes.
- 1 tsp dried oregano: Continues the Italian flavor theme in the sauce.
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional): For those who enjoy a kick of heat.
- Salt and pepper to taste: Every sauce needs the right seasoning for full flavor.
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish: A fragrant finishing touch that adds color and flavor.
Instructions
- Make the Meatball Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 lb ground turkey, 1 large egg, ½ cup breadcrumbs, ⅓ cup grated Parmesan cheese, 2 tbsp milk, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp dried basil, ½ tsp smoked paprika, ½ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp black pepper. Mix gently until combined, being careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough meatballs.
- Stuff the Meatballs: Take about 2 tablespoons of the mixture, flatten it in your hand, and place a mozzarella ball or piece in the center. Carefully roll the mixture around the cheese, sealing it fully to form a ball. Repeat this process until all the meatball mixture is used.
- Cook the Meatballs: You can choose between two cooking methods:
- Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the meatballs on it. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Stovetop Method: In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tbsp olive oil. Gently place the meatballs in the skillet and sear them until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low, cooking until the meatballs are cooked through.
- Prepare the Sauce: In a separate saucepan, heat 2 tbsp olive oil over medium heat. Add 1 small diced onion and sauté until translucent. Add 3 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional minute. Then, pour in 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes and stir in 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp dried oregano, ½ tsp red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the sauce to simmer for 15-20 minutes to develop the flavors.
- Combine Meatballs and Sauce: Once the meatballs are cooked, add them to the sauce, spooning sauce over each meatball. Let them simmer together for about 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Serve: Garnish your Mozzarella-Stuffed Turkey Meatballs with fresh basil leaves. These meatballs are delicious served over your choice of pasta, with crusty bread, or alongside a fresh salad!
