Delicious Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 1 poundground beef (or lamb if preferred)
  • 1 poundturkey or chicken (if you prefer a lighter option)
  • 1medium onion (diced (about 1 cup))
  • 1 cupgreen bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 clovesgarlic (minced)
  • 1 cupbeef broth or stock
  • 1 tablespoonWorcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoonblack pepper
  • 1 tablespoonolive oil (or another cooking oil)
  • 1½ cupsshredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 4hamburger buns or sub rolls
  • Optional: hot sauce (for added flavor)

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large skillet or frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and the onions become translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 2

Add in 1 pound of ground beef (optionally lamb) and 1 pound of ground turkey or chicken to the skillet. Season with ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Cook the meat, breaking it up with a spatula, until it is nicely browned and fully cooked, approximately 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

Pour in 1 cup of beef broth or stock along with 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine all the ingredients. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes, or until it thickens slightly, stirring occasionally.

  4. 4

Once the mixture has thickened, sprinkle on 1½ cups of shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and everything is well combined.

  5. 5

While the cheese is melting, toast the hamburger buns or sub rolls in a separate skillet or oven until they are lightly golden.

  6. 6

Finally, scoop the cheesy meat mixture onto the toasted buns. Optionally, drizzle with hot sauce for an extra kick, and serve immediately.
