Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine 1 cup warm water and 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. In a large bowl, mix 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tsp sugar, and 1 tsp salt. Add the yeast mixture and 2 tbsp olive oil, stirring until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until it's smooth. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Cook the Filling:
- While the dough rises, heat a skillet over medium heat and cook 1 lb ground turkey bacon or chicken until browned. Drain any excess fat. Stir in 1 cup pizza sauce and simmer for about 5 minutes. Set aside.
Assemble the Pizza Pie:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the risen dough into a large circle and press it into a greased deep baking dish or springform pan, trimming any excess dough from the edges. Begin layering by adding 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese on the crust base, followed by the meat filling, ½ cup sliced mushrooms, and ½ cup sliced green bell peppers or jalapeños. Repeat the layers of cheese and fillings as desired. Finish with extra shredded mozzarella and garnish with pepperoni slices or additional vegetables.
Bake:
- Bake the assembled pizza in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbled and slightly browned on top. Once done, let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Serve and Enjoy:
- Slice into wedges and serve them warm. This pizza pairs beautifully with a crisp side salad or some garlic bread for a complete meal.
