Ingredients

  • 1 pound small button mushrooms ends trimmed: The star of the dish, providing a juicy texture inside the crisp coating.
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour divided use: Forms the base of the batter and also used for dusting the mushrooms before dipping in the batter.
  • 1 cup beer: Adds lightness and flavor to the batter; choose a light beer for a milder taste or a darker one for more richness.
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt: Enhances the overall flavor of the batter and mushrooms.
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper: Adds a slight heat and depth to the flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder: Provides a subtle garlic hint that complements the mushrooms well.
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder: Adds a slight onion flavor to the batter enriching the taste profile.
  • Oil for frying: Necessary for cooking giving the mushrooms their crispy texture.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped: Used for garnishing, adds a fresh, herbal note to the finished dish.

Method

  1. Heat the oil: Start by heating 3 inches of oil in a deep pot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Dust the mushrooms: Coat the mushrooms in 1/2 cup of flour, shaking off any excess.
  3. Prepare the batter: In a medium bowl, mix together the remaining cup of flour, beer, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  4. Batter the mushrooms: Dip each mushroom in the batter, allowing excess to drip off.
  5. Fry the mushrooms: Fry the mushrooms in batches, 4-5 at a time, until golden brown, about 7 minutes per batch.
  6. Drain and serve: Remove the mushrooms from the oil, let them drain, sprinkle with chopped parsley, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Experiment with spices: Feel free to add spices such as cayenne pepper or smoked paprika to the batter for an extra kick.
  • Serving suggestions: Serve these mushrooms with a variety of dipping sauces like ranch dressing, barbecue sauce, or honey mustard for a delightful experience.
